Association of Medical Research Charities

The Association of Medical Research Charities provides a collective voice for over 100 of the medical research charities in the UK. Their combined contribution to medical research is over £400 million.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is Britain's lead funding agency for academic research in the non-medical life sciences. In addition to funding research and training, BBSRC also has a role in providing advice, disseminating knowledge, and promoting public understanding in the fields of biotechnology and the biological sciences.

Medical Research Council

The Medical Research Council is the UK's principal public funder of basic and applied medical research. Its remit extends from basic studies of key biological molecules, through studies of health and disease in humans and relevant animals, to research into social and environmental factors affecting health and evaluations of novel medical treatments. The MRC's website includes material on ethics, practice, and impact of animal studies.

Roslin Institute

Roslin Institute is a BBSRC-sponsored centre for research on molecular and quantitative genetics of farm animals. It has pioneered the development of methods for genetic modification of farm animals and has internationally recognised programmes of research on animal breeding, genome analysis, reproduction, development, animal behaviour and nutrition. Roslin's mission is "to understand and improve the productivity, breeding, and welfare of farm animals".

Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust is the world's largest medical research charity with an annual spend of some £600 million in the financial year 1999/2000. The Wellcome Trust supports more than 3,000 researchers, at 300 locations, in 30 different countries. As well as funding major initiatives in the public understanding of science, the Wellcome Trust is the country's leading supporter of research into the history of medicine.
